European Memory Data Space (EMDS): Stolpersteine in the digital age – innovation in Holocaust remembrance
How can new digital tools help us to commemorate the Holocaust, whilst respecting the dignity and privacy of the victims and their relatives?
Stolpersteine is Europe’s largest decentralised Holocaust remembrance initiative. It connects families, dedicated volunteers, local communities and archives through local, meaningful acts of remembrance. But what can ever-evolving digital technology add to this — and where are the boundaries?
This program brings together the Stolpersteine community from the Benelux region with researchers, heritage professionals and innovators. Through presentations and open discussions, we will explore how digital tools such as search programmes, storytelling platforms, data spaces and artificial intelligence can support remembrance. Always with an eye for what is responsible, respectful and humane.
We warmly invite you to take part and share your experiences with the community. Please contact us if you would like to present your digital projects during the event.
The detailed programme will follow shortly.
Organised by the Jewish Heritage Network in collaboration with Het Hornemann Huis.
About European Memory Data Space (EMDS)
European Memory Data Space (EMDS) is envisioned to become an innovative data space ecosystem dedicated to Holocaust-related data. Joining the family of European Common Data Spaces, it will bring together archives, research institutions, commemoration projects, and memorials across Europe. Leveraging vast collections of digitsed Holocaust resources, EMDS aims to connect thousands of data sources to create the foundations of the remembrance culture of the 21st century.
The first phase of the project, EMDS - Blueprint, funded by the CERV program of the European Commission, comprises a comprehensive series of collaborative workshops across Europe in 2025-26. Working with various stakeholder groups, we will collaboratively design the Blueprint of the future Data Space, visualize it, and communicate it to a broad audience of professionals and activists involved with Holocaust-related data.
